It Worked For Us
A Rally Day Banner To Last A Lifetime
By Glenda Yocum
Our Christian Education Committee utilized some ideas and materials provided by the Pennsylvania State Sunday School Association, but we wanted to add something that would make our program our very own and allow even the youngest Sunday school participant to become actively and enthusiastically involved in our theme for the Sunday school year.
We designed a banner using the "I Love Sunday School" logo and presented it for our Rally Day activities, along with a challenge for each Sunday school participant to design a heart made of felt to be added to our banner. It was to be something that would represent that person, something they would recognize as their own when the banner was completed. This was to be accomplished at home, to involve the entire family. The hearts could be made of any fabric and decorated in any way. The only specification given was a maximum size of 4" diameter. What a success the project was. The children loved having an assignment to complete at home. Parents got involved and made hearts, too, as did siblings. Old shirts, favorite dresses, blankets, blue jeans, dish towels and various other items were used to design the hearts. Some were decorated with paints, sequins, monograms, lace and other items. Each one was beautiful in its own way. Each made the "I Love Sunday School" statement from a different person, and collectively, they provide our Sunday school with a banner to be proudly displayed.
