Understanding The Spiritual Needs of Today's Families

By Jack Lowndes

The Lord's Day Alliance of the United States is interested in effecting a reversal in the moral breakdown of our society. One of the most disturbing changes that I believe contributes to our moral decline is the lack of traditional family values.

During the most recent meeting of the L.D.A.'s Board of Managers a change was made in the name and assignment given to one of our standing committees. The "State and National Affairs Committee" was changed to the "Cultural Affairs Committee." This was done, in part, to include encouraging more family activity relating to Sabbath observance.

It will strengthen the family if family members take time to rest and worship together on the Lord's Day. The committee will study issues related to family trends and report to the Board of Managers on ways we can encourage church attendance and rest on the part of families.

Tony Compolo, speaking at Union University in Jackson, Tennessee, addressed the issue of family values. The news release concerning his remarks gave emphasis to Americans making marriage important by following the model of marriage with Christ at the center. Compolo was quoted as saying, "In the midst of cultural definitions of what a man or a woman should be, we've forgotten what Jesus is all about." The New Testament makes it plain that Jesus attended worship and did good deeds on the Sabbath.

It is my prayer that we will see more homes where Christian principles are taught, where the good news is proclaimed, and where Sunday is a day for worship.
