Sunday Belongs To God

By Robert V. Ozment

Sunday belongs to the Lord - or at least it is supposed to be His day. For Christians SUNDAY is our Sabbath. The Bible tells us, "Remember the Sabbath..." Lady Maria Callcott wrote, "The streams of religion run deeper or shallower, as the banks of the Sabbath are kept up or neglected." A preacher in Holland called the Sabbath "God's dyke, shutting out an ocean of evils."

John McLean, the American jurist, wrote, "Where there is no Christian Sabbath, there is no Christian morality; and without this, free institutions cannot long be sustained." The psalmist was right when he wrote, "Our strength is of the Lord."

There was a time when the only thing most of us could do after church on Sunday was take a quiet walk. The movies were closed. There were no baseball, football, soccer, basketball or hockey games.

I know what some of you are thinking: "Things are different! We live in a different time." That may be, but do you suppose things are BETTER?

When you get up on Sunday you have a choice. You can still go to Sunday school and church. You can also go buy a new pair of shoes, or get groceries or even buy a new suit. If you don't find your way to the house of God on Sunday you are cheating God and you have cheated yourself even more. You may have cheated your grandchildren. I like what I heard a man say once, "I know my children follow my footsteps and I'd rather they would follow me to church than anywhere I know." I'll see you in church and Sunday school this SUNDAY!
