Giving Thanks For Sunday
By Rev. Wayne Frazier
Lettie Cowman traveled over a century ago on an expedition to explore portions of Africa. They hired Africans to carry their provisions. On the first day they made such good progress that it appeared they would reach their goal sooner than anticipated.
But the next morning, the men carrying the supplies simply sat there resting. Through a translator, they were asked, "Why are you resting?"
They replied, "We're waiting for our souls to catch up with our bodies. Yesterday the pace was too fast."
That's why God ordained the Lord's Day, a day of rest and worship. That's why we give thanks for Sunday, the Lord's Day! It is God's gracious provision for our souls to catch up with our bodies.
More and more studies are showing the impact of stress on our bodies and souls. In an agrarian society rest was necessary after extensive physical labor for six days. The same was true in an industrial society.
Now in an informational, high-tech society, we need rest from the constant bombardment of information that threatens to drown us in a sea of information that totally distracts us from God.
For the Lord's Day is, above everything else, a day designed for worship to center us again on God who is our life. Life in a secular, godless world has one Satanic design - to keep our bodies and minds moving ahead of our souls.
It's about time that we "draw the lines" where God does. His commands are always for our good. He created us and knows that we need worship and rest on the Lord's Day.
I give thanks for the Lord's Day which allows my soul to catch up with my body! What about you? Remember, it takes a faithful and consistent commitment to receive God's blessing in the Lord's Day!
Will you make the commitment and receive God's blessing? Or will you receive God's curse: Stress?
